João Massa took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ryszard Pilipiec, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 16 minutes into the match, UFC STEAUA's goal looked a bit too open when Radoslaw Trojanowski came free, but João Massa reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Pogoń Stawiszyn were awarded a corner in the 17th minute after UFC STEAUA's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Radoslaw Trojanowski took the corner. Pogoń Stawiszyn's Bartosz Faron was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but João Massa in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. After 19 minutes of play, Pogoń Stawiszyn's Ryszard Pilipiec made it 1-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. João Massa was left in no man's land by his defense there! Kazimierz Dylla sent away a hard shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Rafet Faydalı hit a great freekick 28 minutes into the match. UFC STEAUA's João Massa proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 29th minute of the match, managed to save UFC STEAUA from getting a goal against them. Ryszard Pilipiec received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 31st minute. João Massa tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The crowd rose to their feet as Pogoń Stawiszyn's Ryszard Pilipiec slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of João Massa. That made the score 2-0 after 32 minutes of play. Therkild Prendorf fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Gilbert Podolski having to interfere. A collision led to UFC STEAUA getting a freekick after 36 minutes play. Rafet Faydalı hit a great ball. In the 36th minute, Radoslaw Trojanowski sent off a long shot on goal, but the shot was nowhere near the goal and UFC STEAUA's João Massa didn't even have to move. Kazimierz Dylla's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but João Massa firmly grabbed it by the left post. If Kazimierz Dylla had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Pogoń Stawiszyn's Gilbert Podolski played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cezar Alexandru in the 43rd minute of play. In the 44th match minute, Pogoń Stawiszyn was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Julian Kossakowski to maneuver through the defense.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Ryszard Pilipiec was the one to do the kick off. Rafet Faydalı could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 56th minute of the match, but Gilbert Podolski made a huge save. Ryszard Pilipiec fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without João Massa having to interfere. With a little luck, Pogoń Stawiszyn's Gilbert Podolski got control of the ball when Hermengildo Jobo tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 67th minute Ryszard Pilipiec shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but João Massa saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The audience was convinced that Ryszard Pilipiec's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but João Massa was relentless in the 73rd minute of the game. Gilbert Podolski made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cezar Alexandru in the 90th minute of play. Pogoń Stawiszyn's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
