Venancio Emesto's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Sabahattin Erten firmly grabbed it by the left post. Sporting de Gijón's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Saturnino Curcio in the 39th minute. If Florencio Oihan had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 41st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Alphonso Davies hit a great freekick 87 minutes into the match. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Diego Maradona in the 89th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sabahattin Erten saved United from getting behind. Óscar Cordoba made an important save on a dangerous shot by Rolando Bela in the 91st minute. In the 93rd minute Wayne Rooney shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sabahattin Erten saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 96th minute the ball was on its way in behind United's goalkeeper Sabahattin Erten, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar.
