But to his dismay, Sung McKinley quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Costa Rica's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Kerry Sellers was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-2. Aurelio Badilla could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 38th minute of the match, but Roberto Layton made a huge save. When Elton Brewster came up free with the goalie in the 40th minute, the USA fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Elton Brewster couldn't finish the play. Frank Mora showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cody Miles, who was totally free with the ball in the 42nd minute. USA's Roberto Layton played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Reiner Fallas in the 47th minute of play. Disappointed in the 0-2 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Lincoln Hand to strike the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lincoln Hand got free with Frank Mora in the 53rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 54th minute Lincoln Hand shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Frank Mora saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 56 minutes into the match, Merlin Castro had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Frank Mora. In the 66th minute Sung McKinley shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Frank Mora saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With a little luck, Costa Rica's Frank Mora got control of the ball when Merlin Castro tried to sneak it across the goal line. Costa Rica's Frank Mora played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Lincoln Hand in the 74th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lincoln Hand in the 76th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Frank Mora to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Frank Mora stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Edgardo Silva's shot from short distance in the 80th minute. With an all-out effort, USA's Frank Mora threw himself towards the right post 80 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Lincoln Hand, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. In the 83rd minute, Merlin Castro left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The USA fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-6. USA's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
