Guatemala's Nery Pumpido proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 27th minute of the match, managed to save Guatemala from getting a goal against them. With a little luck, Guatemala's Nery Pumpido got control of the ball when Nelson Mendoza tried to sneak it across the goal line. Juan José Ferraro sent away a hard shot on goal in the 32nd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. 36 minutes into the game, Nelson Mendoza recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Nery Pumpido. Nelson Mendoza showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-1. In the 39th minute Raúl Quintanilla shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Nery Pumpido saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

Nery Pumpido took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Nelson Mendoza, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Paradorn Todor made an important save on a dangerous shot by Juan José Ferraro in the 60th minute. Paradorn Todor showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Juan José Ferraro in the 66th minute of the match. El Salvador's Paradorn Todor proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 68th minute of the match, managed to save El Salvador from getting a goal against them. Paradorn Todor was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Juan José Ferraro showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-2 in the 69 minute of play. Juan José Ferraro's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 83rdth minute, Paradorn Todor skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Juan José Ferraros short, quick shot in the 93rdth minute got Paradorn Todor to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Juan José Ferraro might have been able to make a better finish in the 95th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Paradorn Todor. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Juan José Ferraro ran back to his position shaking his head. After a rather tough play, Guatemala's Angel Alvarenga got a free kick in the 96th minute.
