In the 19th minute Bulgaria were awarded a corner. Lachezar Kavaldzhiev went to the cornerflag to take it. 22 minutes into the match, Portugal's goal looked a bit too open when Stanislav Búlgarov came free, but Máximo Laureano reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Romão Mourato sent away a hard shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. In the 23rd minute Romão Mourato shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Vitomir Starokin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Máximo Laureano showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marko Ruskov, who was totally free with the ball in the 25th minute. Mauro Bezerra came free with the goalkeeper in the 29th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Vitomir Starokin could save by the left post. Máximo Laureano showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Stanislav Georgiev in the 31st minute of the match. Portugal's attentive Nicolas Balsemão managed to snatch the ball when Marian Todorov made a throw-in in the 33rd minute of the game. In the 37th minute Stanislav Georgiev shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Máximo Laureano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 39 minutes into the game, Stanislav Búlgarov was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Bulgaria's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Portugal the free kick. In the 39th minute, Stanislav Búlgarov hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Stanislav Búlgarov was the one to do the kick off. Vitomir Starokin made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Romão Mourato in the 51st minute of play. After a rather tough play, Bulgaria's Pavlin Dragomirov got a free kick in the 53rd minute. 55 minutes into the game, Portugal's Romão Mourato nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Vitomir Starokin made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-0. Bulgaria's Nikolay Karpuzov was substituted for Lachezar Kavaldzhiev. With a little luck, Portugal's Máximo Laureano got control of the ball when Anton Gevechanov tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 69thth minute of the game Romão Mourato who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Bulgaria's Vitomir Starokin was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. In the 89th minute the ball was on its way in behind Bulgaria's goalkeeper Vitomir Starokin, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Portugal's defense didn't have a chance, in the 91st minute, when Anton Gevechanov scored to the left of an out of position Máximo Laureano, making the score, 1-1. Máximo Laureano made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Stanislav Búlgarov in the 95th minute of play.
