When Hyman Buckner fell near the penalty area in the 41st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Toronto FC's protests and gave Hyman Buckner a yellow card for diving instead. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-1. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Ilie Scripcaru showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Abraham Mejia, who was totally free with the ball in the 85th minute. With 87 minutes on the clock, Isac Ielciu commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. After 86 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for FC Steaua București! When the match had been going on for 88 minutes, Toronto FC's Abraham Mejia got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. He stayed cool and waited for the goalkeeper to move, before he confidently shot the ball into the goal, to the left of Ilie Scripcaru. After a defensive mix-up in Toronto FC's zone, Dan Iovanovici stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Papillion Cheek came out of the goal and Dan Iovanovici tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 93rd minute of the game. One of FC Steaua București:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Toronto FC:s goal. The goalkeeper, Ilie Scripcaru, was totally fooled by Toronto FC's Abraham Mejia, who 95 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. After a rather tough play, FC Steaua București's Gheorghe Bărănescu got a free kick in the 99th minute. When Abraham Mejia came up free with the goalie in the 99th minute, the Toronto FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Abraham Mejia couldn't finish the play. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Toronto FC eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
