After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Éric Cantona stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Johnny Ibarra came out of the goal and Éric Cantona tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Jérémie Sarmiento in the 24th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Sebastian Hellkvist prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Jérémie Sarmiento took the ball and in the 29 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Sebastian Hellkvist. Sebastian Hellkvist dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. An unexpectedly hard shot by Éric Cantona in the 31st minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Johnny Ibarra to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 35 minutes into the game, Ecuador's Jérémie Sarmiento nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Sebastian Hellkvist made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. With an all-out effort, Inter de Guayaquil FC's Johnny Ibarra threw himself towards the right post 44 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Éric Cantona, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Washington Piedrahita hit a great freekick 45 minutes into the match.

Inter de Guayaquil FC made a substitution. Jörn Svartengren replaced Jakub Ziombkowski. When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Jörn Svartengren made a kick off. Jérémie Sarmiento blasted a shot towards the goal in the 59th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Sebastian Hellkvist having to make a save. The audience thought a goal was coming when Angel Mena got free with Sebastian Hellkvist in the 70th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. An unexpectedly hard shot by Fidel Martínez in the 74th minute of play forced Inter de Guayaquil FC's goalkeeper Sebastian Hellkvist to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Inter de Guayaquil FC's Jörn Svartengren in the 83rd minute got a chance for a shot 83rd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Ecuador walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
