Folke Carlsson recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 7th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Vidingsjö MOIF's Jan-Olof Kleen got a good chance for a goal in the 7th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Paul Newbury showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jan-Olof Kleen in the 9th minute of the match. After some careless play in the New York Cosmos AFC defense, Folke Carlsson kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Paul Newbury. The New York Cosmos AFC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Paul Newbury should have stopped the shot. In the 16th minute Folke Carlsson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Paul Newbury saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. A collision led to Vidingsjö MOIF getting a freekick after 17 minutes play. Jan-Olof Kleen hit a great ball. After a defensive mix-up in New York Cosmos AFC's zone, Jan-Olof Kleen stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Paul Newbury came out of the goal and Jan-Olof Kleen tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Staffan Josefsson blasted a shot towards the goal in the 24th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Paul Newbury having to make a save. When the match had gone on for 26 minutes, Folke Carlsson put it in 0-2 from a short distance just to the right of Paul Newbury. Staffan Josefsson sent away a hard shot on goal in the 36th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When the match clock showed 42 minutes, the score became 1-3 when Jan-Olof Kleen sped through New York Cosmos AFC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Paul Newbury. Tomas Hedström might have been able to make a better finish in the 44th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Paul Newbury. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Tomas Hedström ran back to his position shaking his head. The supporters of New York Cosmos AFC booed when Vidingsjö MOIF was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 45 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jan-Olof Kleen didn't get a good kick on the ball. The New York Cosmos AFC players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Vidingsjö MOIF were winning 1-3.

The wind increased when Folke Carlsson made the kick off in the second half. Paul Newbury took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Folke Carlsson, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Jo Allanson during the 52nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Vidingsjö MOIF's supporters rose to their feet, but Marcus Granqvist was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Paul Newbury breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Paul Newbury didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Folke Carlsson went, in the 59th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-4 was the resulting score. When Vidingsjö MOIF's Jan-Olof Kleen in the 63rd minute got a chance for a shot 63rd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye New York Cosmos AFC's goalie prevented a goal. After 66 played minutes Vidingsjö MOIF got a freekick which was hit by Folke Carlsson. Vidingsjö MOIF made a substitution. Jörgen Blom replaced Jan-Olof Kleen. New York Cosmos AFC's Paul Newbury played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jörgen Blom in the 75th minute of play. In the 76th minute Benjamin Edmonton shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Joar Lindberg saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. New York Cosmos AFC's Pete Rundle got a good chance for a goal in the 77th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Vidingsjö MOIF's Jarl Biörkquist was substituted for Tobias Högström. Staffan Josefsson in the 81stth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Paul Newbury, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. If Staffan Josefsson had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 84th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Staffan Josefsson got free with Paul Newbury in the 91st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Vidingsjö MOIF played a much better game than New York Cosmos AFC and deserved their victory. The New York Cosmos AFC players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
