Wakefield Wanderers's Louie Hicks played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ozzy Norton in the 15th minute of play. Darryl Simpson who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 17thth minute tested the skills of Robbie Gamble when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 18th minute Dominic Seaman shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Louie Hicks saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Louie Hicks took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Vic Carragher, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 21 minutes into the match, Dominic Seaman had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Louie Hicks. Wakefield Wanderers's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Dominic Seaman was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. Alastair Quantrill sent away a hard shot on goal in the 26th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Nial Sherman lost his temper 47 minutes into the game and shoved another player to the ground. He was immediately shown a red card. In the 46th minute, one of Wakefield Wanderers:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Wakefield Wanderers. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-2.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Ozzy Norton was the one to do the kick off.
