Brigid Rutherford showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Phillip McKeochan, who was totally free with the ball in the 4th minute. In the 6th minute Hewney Kirby shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jesse McJames saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Brigid Rutherford took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Phillip McKeochan, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 20 minutes, Barhart Costello made it 1-1 with a short kick to the right side. Smiddy Celts's Jesse McJames tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. After a rather tough play, St. James Gate F.C.'s Barnaby Bayes got a free kick in the 44th minute. Barnaby Bayes kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. After a defensive mix-up in Smiddy Celts's zone, Burke Martyn stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jesse McJames came out of the goal and Burke Martyn tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The wind increased when Phillip McKeochan made the kick off in the second half. Hewney Kirby scored 2-1 in the 54th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Jesse McJames, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Jesse McJames came out of the goal in the 62nd minute to try and stop a shot by St. James Gate F.C.'s Barhart Costello. But to his dismay, Barhart Costello quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 4-1. 67 minutes into the match, Smiddy Celts's goal looked a bit too open when Hewney Kirby came free, but Jesse McJames reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. St. James Gate F.C.'s Brigid Rutherford played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Wal McVean in the 68th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Graeme Gordon got free with Brigid Rutherford in the 70th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 70th match minute, Smiddy Celts was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Paddy Thomson to maneuver through the defense. Smiddy Celts's Graeme McRobie was substituted for Graeme Gordon. Paddy Thomson hit a great freekick 72 minutes into the match. Bannon Glen Crowe took the ball and in the 73 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Jesse McJames. Jesse McJames dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 5-1. When St. James Gate F.C.'s Hewney Kirby in the 75th minute got a chance for a shot 75th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. Graeme McRobies short, quick shot in the 95thth minute got Brigid Rutherford to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. An unexpectedly hard shot by Phillip McKeochan in the 97th minute of play forced St. James Gate F.C.'s goalkeeper Brigid Rutherford to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. St. James Gate F.C.'s fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
