With an all-out effort, Inter de Guayaquil FC's Johnny Ibarra threw himself towards the right post 23 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Éric Cantona, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Inter de Guayaquil FC's Sebastian Hellkvist played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Flavio Cifuentes in the 24th minute of play. Sebastian Hellkvist made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pat Lloret in the 25th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Éric Cantona in the 29th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Johnny Ibarra to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Éric Cantona could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 34th minute of the match, but Johnny Ibarra made a huge save. Intriago Herquinigo made a great header on Ecuador's corner, it was just that Inter de Guayaquil FC's Sebastian Hellkvist managed to reach the ball for a save. In the 77th minute Diego van Basten shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sebastian Hellkvist saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Johnny Ibarra didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Jörn Svartengren went, in the 80th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-0 was the resulting score. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. Inter de Guayaquil FC had played much better football throughout.
