Darron Karros's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Clint Benoit read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 23rd minute of play. Chicago FC's Clint Benoit played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Darron Karros in the 26th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Darron Karros in the 28th minute of play forced Chicago FC's goalkeeper Clint Benoit to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Chicago FC's Wade Weldon got a good chance for a goal in the 31st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Darron Karros fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Clint Benoit having to interfere. Clint Benoit showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sergio Doran, who was totally free with the ball in the 40th minute. In the 42nd minute, Sergio Doran got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

The wind increased when Darron Karros made the kick off in the second half. Thanh Wallace made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Brant Powell in the 55th minute of play. If Brant Powell had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 63rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in Santos Atletico's zone, Wade Weldon stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Thanh Wallace came out of the goal and Wade Weldon tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 74 minutes, Bo McDonough mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Chicago FC and the Santos Atletico players grew even worse after the yellow card.
