Matthew Thorne kicked well hit freekick during the 6th minute of the match. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Thanh Maloney in the 22nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Mickey Pham prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Mickey Pham showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Thanh Maloney, who was totally free with the ball in the 30th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Thanh Maloney in the 32nd minute of play forced Roanoke FC's goalkeeper Mickey Pham to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 33 minutes into the game, Knoxville United FC's Kyle Háva nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. In the 47th match minute, Roanoke FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Wilfred Paul to maneuver through the defense. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Larry Morris stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 52nd minute of the match, Son Gaines got a very nice opportunity to score, but Mickey Pham was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Ahmed Zimmerman charged in rather forcefully in the 53rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Ahmed Zimmerman the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Roanoke FC getting a freekick after 53 minutes play. Ahmed Zimmerman hit a great ball. Felix Cowan didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Raphael Dudley went, in the 56th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-2 was the resulting score. An unexpectedly hard shot by Derek Irwin in the 60th minute of play forced Knoxville United FC's goalkeeper Felix Cowan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 63 played minutes Kyle Háva rounded Roanoke FC's defense and shot a beautiful shot into goal via left pole - 1-3. After having played for 66 minutes, Raphael Dudley managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Roanoke FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Raphael Dudley was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Raphael Dudley sent away a hard shot on goal in the 67th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Woody Woodall, 70 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Mickey Pham showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Thanh Maloney, who was totally free with the ball in the 73rd minute. After a rather tough play, Knoxville United FC's Matthew Thorne got a free kick in the 77th minute. In the 82nd match minute, Roanoke FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Miles Ragsdale to maneuver through the defense. In the 85th minute Derek Irwin shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Felix Cowan saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Roanoke FC's Mickey Pham proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 90th minute of the match, managed to save Roanoke FC from getting a goal against them. Son Gaines scored 1-4 in the 98th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Mickey Pham, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. When the final whistle sounded Knoxville United FC left the ground with the victory after a much better performance than Roanoke FC.
