The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. MONTERREY's Köksal Erek got a good chance for a goal in the 4th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Mitchell Hopson kicked well hit freekick during the 5th minute of the match. In the 8thth minute of the game Köksal Erek who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Knoxville United FC's Felix Cowan was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Son Gaines received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 11th minute. Brede Røv tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Brede Røv showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Thanh Maloney in the 15th minute of the match. MONTERREY's Mitchell Hopson got a good chance for a goal in the 21st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a rather tough play, Knoxville United FC's Ahmed Evans got a free kick in the 22nd minute. When Köksal Erek came up free with the goalie in the 25th minute, the MONTERREY fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Köksal Erek couldn't finish the play. Thanh Maloney fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 27th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brede Røv having to interfere. Ignacy Kornecki fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 35th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Felix Cowan having to interfere. After 41 minutes, Jeff Adams mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Knoxville United FC and the MONTERREY players grew even worse after the yellow card. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Thanh Maloney stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Ace Laird hit a great freekick 53 minutes into the match. When Kyle Háva fell near the penalty area in the 60th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Knoxville United FC's protests and gave Kyle Háva a yellow card for diving instead. In the 61st minute, Kyle Háva hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Felix Cowan took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Köksal Erek, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 85 minutes into the match, Köksal Erek dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Felix Cowan, 0-2. In the 88th match minute, MONTERREY was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Köksal Erek to maneuver through the defense. Felix Cowan was a little too slow when Köksal Erek got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 90th minute. The score was now 0-3. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Köksal Erek in the 94th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Felix Cowan prevented the ball from getting in the gole. MONTERREY played a much better game than Knoxville United FC and deserved their victory. The Knoxville United FC players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
