After 7 minutes of play, Delph's Garfield Sparks made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Noel Wynn was left in no man's land by his defense there! The supporters of Sport Recife booed when Delph was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 11 match minutes in a wonderful position. Lou Dodson didn't get a good kick on the ball. A hard shot by Gilberto Madrid from long distance, 12 minutes into the match, got Bruno Meredith's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Arnold Course in the 16th minute of play forced Delph's goalkeeper Bruno Meredith to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Drew Ferris hit a great freekick 16 minutes into the match. After 21 played minutes Sport Recife got a freekick which was hit by Julian Coats. When Mike Moïse came up free with the goalie in the 30th minute, the Delph fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Mike Moïse couldn't finish the play. After a defensive mix-up in Delph's zone, Arnold Course stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Bruno Meredith came out of the goal and Arnold Course tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Barton Aucoin hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. Arnold Course struck a weak shot in the 41st minute. Bruno Meredith didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Sport Recife. Noel Wynn made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Garfield Sparks in the 43rd minute of play. When Mike Moïse came up free with the goalie in the 46th minute, the Delph fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Mike Moïse couldn't finish the play. Mike Moïse fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 48th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Noel Wynn having to interfere. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-3 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Lowell Kincaid to strike the kick off in the second half. Bruno Meredith showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Arnold Course, who was totally free with the ball in the 69th minute. When the match was over Delph could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Sport Recife throughout the match.
