Virgilio Riveros fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 9th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Hernán Solabarrieta having to interfere. The supporters of Rinihue booed when Newcastle United FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 10 match minutes in a wonderful position. Rafa Puccio didn't get a good kick on the ball. Hernán Solabarrieta stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Virgilio Riveros's shot from short distance in the 13th minute. If Sergi Colimán had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 14th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Virgilio Riveros received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 16th minute. Hernán Solabarrieta tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Virgilio Riveros's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Hernán Solabarrieta read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 18th minute of play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Ronaldo Carvajal during the 21st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 21 played minutes Rinihue got a freekick which was hit by Ronaldo Carvajal. Sebastiano Macchiavello missed a clear chance of a goal when in the 23 minute of the game fired away a shot, but unfortunally the ball went out to the Leoncio Margulis right hand side. Leoncio Margulis made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Andreo Apparcel in the 29th minute of play. Andreo Apparcel sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. If Sergi Colimán had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 40th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Uriel Saso could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 43rd minute of the match, but Leoncio Margulis made a huge save. Sergi Colimán sent away a hard shot on goal in the 44th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 48th minute, Jaume Grillo got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Sergi Colimán to make the kick off. Hernán Solabarrieta came out of the goal and Virgilio Riveros tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Sergi Colimán was extremely unlucky when he, in the 67th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. After some fancy dribbling in the 72nd minute, Uriel Saso managed to get in a good position for a shot. Newcastle United FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Uriel Saso was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Leoncio Margulis breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
