Lessa's Dráusio Mendes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Erivaldo Chaves in the 5th minute of play. If Claudinho do Valle had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 7th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Claudinho do Valle fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 10th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Dráusio Mendes having to interfere. Luís Loyola's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Abelardo Sampaio read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 15th minute of play. Erivaldo Chaves struck a weak shot in the 18th minute. Dráusio Mendes didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Jose. When Cristian Quaresma came up free with the goalie in the 21st minute, the Lessa fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Cristian Quaresma couldn't finish the play. Jose's Abelardo Sampaio proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 23rd minute of the match, managed to save Jose from getting a goal against them. After 29 minutes, Horácio Domingues mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Jose and the Lessa players grew even worse after the yellow card. A collision led to Jose getting a freekick after 30 minutes play. Horácio Domingues hit a great ball. When the match had gone on for 35 minutes, Erivaldo Chaves put it in 0-1 from a short distance just to the right of Dráusio Mendes. After having played for 41 minutes, Cristian Quaresma managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Lessa's supporters crossed their fingers, but Cristian Quaresma was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Luís Loyola's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Abelardo Sampaio read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 44th minute of play.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Erivaldo Chaves stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. If Claudinho do Valle had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Dráusio Mendes took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Horácio Domingues, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Dráusio Mendes made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Claudinho do Valle in the 62nd minute of play. 66 minutes into the match, Jose's goal looked a bit too open when Luís Loyola came free, but Abelardo Sampaio reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Claudinho do Valle could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 71st minute of the match, but Dráusio Mendes made a huge save. Erivaldo Chaves struck a weak shot in the 73rd minute. With a little luck, Lessa's Dráusio Mendes got control of the ball when Claudinho do Valle tried to sneak it across the goal line.
