Hélio Vergílios short, quick shot in the 16thth minute got Washington Santana to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. In the 19th minute, Denílson Santos made a precise shot to the right of Washington Santana. Flamengo FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 3-0. Washington Santana showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Váldson de Almeida, who was totally free with the ball in the 28th minute. With a little luck, Flamengo FC's Washington Santana got control of the ball when Hélio Vergílio tried to sneak it across the goal line. Atlético Metropolitano's supporters rose to their feet, but Hélio Vergílio was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Washington Santana breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. A collision led to Flamengo FC getting a freekick after 41 minutes play. Hubert Gunnarsson hit a great ball. 42 minutes into the game, one of Flamengo FC:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Váldson de Almeida in the 46th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Washington Santana prevented the ball from getting in the gole. 48 minutes into the match, Flamengo FC's goal looked a bit too open when Váldson de Almeida came free, but Washington Santana reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 5-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Deivid Arantes made a kick off. 57 minutes into the game, Hélio Vergílio cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 6-0. Washington Santana was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. In the 64th minute, Dedé Eger hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When the match clock showed 66 minutes, the score became 7-0 when Hélio Vergílio sped through Flamengo FC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Washington Santana. Edvaldo Guerra made an important save on a dangerous shot by Deivid Arantes in the 73rd minute. After 76 minutes of play, Atlético Metropolitano's Váldson de Almeida made it 9-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Washington Santana was left in no man's land by his defense there! Washington Santana came out of the goal and Hélio Vergílio tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Váldson de Almeida in the 90th minute of play forced Flamengo FC's goalkeeper Washington Santana to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Atlético Metropolitano's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
