Betinho Couto hit a great freekick 15 minutes into the match. Luizão Meirelles kicked well hit freekick during the 18th minute of the match. Hernani Vieira showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Victor de Barros, who was totally free with the ball in the 28th minute. After a rather tough play, Botafogo's Luizão Meirelles got a free kick in the 29th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Victor de Barros in the 34th minute of play forced Botafogo's goalkeeper Hernani Vieira to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Victor de Barros fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 44th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Hernani Vieira having to interfere. In the 46th minute, Fernando da Cunha got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Victor de Barros made a kick off. Itapema's Samuca Sergipano suffered a sore thigh after 52 minutes and couldn't finish the game. João Carlos Madureira charged in rather forcefully in the 52nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed João Carlos Madureira the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After 53 played minutes Botafogo got a freekick which was hit by João Carlos Madureira. When Gernando Pena came up free with the goalie in the 57th minute, the Botafogo fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gernando Pena couldn't finish the play. A collision led to Itapema getting a freekick after 59 minutes play. Sandrinho Galvão hit a great ball. After 61 minutes Itapema's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Jonas Saldanha who took care of the corner kick. In the 63rd minute Botafogo were awarded a corner. Jonas Saldanha went to the cornerflag to take it. Enio Linares tried in the 63rd minute to hit away a contribution but miss-kicked the ball which ended up in his own goal and left an unhappy Hortêncio Berger a with quite unnecessary self made goal. Result 1-1. If Abelardo Luz had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 70th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. When Abelardo Luz came up free with the goalie in the 72nd minute, the Itapema fans jumped to their feet. Luizão Meirelles hit a great freekick 73 minutes into the match. In the 76th minute, Botafogo's Gernando Pena ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Hortêncio Berger. Hortêncio Berger yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-3. In the 79th minute, Acácio Paulista hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some fancy dribbling in the 80th minute, Jonas Saldanha managed to get in a good position for a shot. Botafogo's supporters rose to their feet, but Jonas Saldanha was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Hortêncio Berger breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Abelardo Luz fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 87th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Hernani Vieira having to interfere. Sandrinho Galvão blasted a shot towards the goal in the 88th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Hernani Vieira having to make a save. Fernando da Cunha might have been able to make a better finish in the 90th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Hortêncio Berger. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Fernando da Cunha ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 95th minute Fernando da Cunha shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hortêncio Berger saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Although Itapema had been in control for most of the match, Botafogo still came away with the win.
