After a rather tough play, Niterói FC's Eliézer Soeiro got a free kick in the 19th minute. Samuel Valladares sent away a hard shot on goal in the 28th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 33rd minute, Biriguy's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Fernando Torres fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. Biriguy's Tião de Mendonça played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cláudio Leão in the 35th minute of play. In the 36th minute the ball was on its way in behind Biriguy's goalkeeper Tião de Mendonça, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 39th match minute, Niterói FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Eliézer Soeiro to maneuver through the defense. In the 43rd minute, Cláudio Leão reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Tião de Mendonça. The goal made the score 1-1. After 46 played minutes Niterói FC got a freekick which was hit by Dudu Britto. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The supporters of Niterói FC booed when Biriguy was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 58 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cauã Soares didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 58 played minutes, Niterói FC's Flávio Almeida shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Tião de Mendonça came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Niterói FC reached it. The supporters of Niterói FC booed when Biriguy was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 62 match minutes in a wonderful position. Cauã Soares didn't get a good kick on the ball. Niterói FC's João Carlos Falcão proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 67th minute of the match, managed to save Niterói FC from getting a goal against them. Cláudio Leão fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 74th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tião de Mendonça having to interfere. Celsinho Macedo hit a great freekick 77 minutes into the match. Flávio Almeida, 78 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Tião de Mendonça took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cláudio Leão, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 88th minute Thiago Alagoano shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but João Carlos Falcão saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a rather tough play, Biriguy's Doni Urbano got a free kick in the 90th minute. Celsinho Macedo's late challenge caught a Niterói FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Celsinho Macedo helped the player get up and apologised. After 98 played minutes, Niterói FC's Flávio Almeida shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Tião de Mendonça came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line.
