In the 19th match minute, Botafogo FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Sebastião Carioca to maneuver through the defense. The supporters of Botafogo FC booed when Maroto was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 30 match minutes in a wonderful position. Enrique Cearense didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 33 minutes, Jorge Queiroz mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Maroto and the Botafogo FC players grew even worse after the yellow card. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Román Espínola couldn't finish the play. Célio Carneiro fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 46th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Olívio Amorim having to interfere. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Román Espínola stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The audience was convinced that Román Espínola's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Laerte Santos was relentless in the 57th minute of the game. In the 63rdth minute of the game Célio Carneiro who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Botafogo FC's Olívio Amorim was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 65 minutes into the match, Tiago Freitas had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Laerte Santos. Maroto's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Tiago Freitas was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-0. After 69 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Maroto! Laerte Santos went to the wrong direction when Percy Dante was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal.
