After a rather tough play, Grêmio's Hortêncio de Amaral got a free kick in the 26th minute. Folke Jönsson could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 28th minute of the match, but Cafu de Queirós made a huge save. Cafu de Queirós was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Pål Glanselius showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-0 in the 29 minute of play. Vitinho de Brito recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 36th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The supporters of Grêmio booed when Atalanta FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gil Mota didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 42nd minute Marcinho Cerezo suffered a thigh injury and had to be helped off the field. Frederico Garcia kicked well hit freekick during the 44th minute of the match. Hélio Catarinense hit a great freekick 46 minutes into the match. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Cristiano Figueiredo made a kick off. Cyprian Borcz showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristiano Figueiredo in the 55th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ademir Ferraz in the 57th minute of play forced Atalanta FC's goalkeeper Cyprian Borcz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Cafu de Queirós didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Atalanta FC. Cyprian Borcz yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 3-1. Atalanta FC walked away with a well-earned victory that was much celebrated by the crowd.
