Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Antônio Sá in the 3rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Alfredinho Arósio prevented the ball from getting in the gole. 6 minutes into the game, Saldanha's Filipe Dias nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Alfredinho Arósio made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. After 10 played minutes Santos FC got a freekick which was hit by Oswaldo Cardozo. With his leg Patrick Nóbrega managed to avoid a goal in the 12thth minute, when Santos FC's Erik Lundström fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Dagoberto Chaves came free with the goalkeeper in the 14th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Patrick Nóbrega could save by the left post. An unexpectedly hard shot by Enio Terra in the 19th minute of play forced Saldanha's goalkeeper Patrick Nóbrega to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Wesley Furlan hit a great freekick 19 minutes into the match. Alfredinho Arósio showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from José Augusto Duarte in the 23rd minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Erik Lundström got free with Patrick Nóbrega in the 27th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 28th minute, Cristiano Santana hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 30th minute, Erik Lundström got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After some careless play in the Santos FC defense, Thiago Netto kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Alfredinho Arósio. The Santos FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Alfredinho Arósio should have stopped the shot. Alfredinho Arósio didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Antônio Sá went, in the 39th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-3 was the resulting score. In the 43rd minute, Nico Maranhense hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After the first half Saldanha were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Alfredinho Arósio took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Wesley Furlan, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 58 minutes into the game, Guilherme Martins was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Saldanha's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Santos FC the free kick. The supporters of Santos FC booed when Saldanha was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 59 match minutes in a wonderful position. Guilherme Martins didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Erik Lundström in the 62nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Patrick Nóbrega saved Saldanha from getting behind. Filipe Dias sent away a hard shot on goal in the 65th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Alfredinho Arósio took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Wesley Furlan, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Alvito Rodriguez had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 70th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After recieving a nice pass, Saldanha's Yan de Queiroz tried to score from far away in the 74th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. Alfredinho Arósio made an important save on a dangerous shot by Antônio Sá in the 78th minute. A collision led to Saldanha getting a freekick after 79 minutes play. Wesley Furlan hit a great ball. Patrick Nóbrega stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Dagoberto Chaves's shot from short distance in the 80th minute. 85 minutes into the match, Santos FC's goalkeeper Alfredinho Arósio had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Antônio Sá. The supporters of Saldanha booed when Santos FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 86 match minutes in a wonderful position. Diogo Cosme didn't get a good kick on the ball. Wesley Furlan kicked well hit freekick during the 92nd minute of the match. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Saldanha eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
