4 minutes into the game, Eduardo Lara was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Eduardo Lara hit a great freekick 7 minutes into the match. Brasil's Naldo Lucas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Antônio Leite in the 10th minute of play. After 12 minutes Brasil's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Dudu Eger who took care of the corner kick. When Mário Faria came up free with the goalie in the 31st minute, the Brasil fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Mário Faria couldn't finish the play. Through an outstanding action, after 34 minutes, Wilson Furtado successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. Naldo Lucas came out of the goal in the 40th minute to try and stop a shot by ESPANHA's Lauro Fernandez. But to his dismay, Lauro Fernandez quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Bruno Saldanha made a kick off. If Bruno Saldanha had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 55th minute. Gilmar Schmidt sent away a hard shot on goal in the 72nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. Wilson Furtado dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-1. 90 minutes into the match, Brasil's goal looked a bit too open when Lauro Fernandez came free, but Naldo Lucas reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Bruno Saldanha received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 91st minute. Wilson Furtado tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Wilson Furtado showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sílvio Cardoso in the 93rd minute of the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 97th minute, Antônio Carlos Saraiva managed to get in a good position for a shot. ESPANHA's supporters rose to their feet, but Antônio Carlos Saraiva was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Naldo Lucas breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
