With an extended leg and a bit of luck Rony Linhares prevented the ball from getting in the gole. When Júlio Araújo came up free with the goalie in the 5th minute, the BAHIA fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Júlio Araújo couldn't finish the play. Ciro Vianna's late challenge caught a BAHIA's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Ciro Vianna helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of BAHIA booed when João Pessoa Espectros was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 6 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ciro Vianna didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 16th minute, Fernando Meireles got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Rony Linhares made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Júlio Araújo in the 19th minute of play. Rony Linhares took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Júlio Araújo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Rony Linhares stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Júlio Araújo's shot from short distance in the 25th minute. Tomás Barral could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 32nd minute of the match, but Nildo Fernandes made a huge save. Júlio Araújo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 37th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rony Linhares having to interfere. 39 minutes into the match, Tomás Barral had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Nildo Fernandes. BAHIA's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Tomás Barral was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-0. Rony Linhares took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Allan de Godoi, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After some fancy dribbling in the 44th minute, Júlio Araújo managed to get in a good position for a shot. BAHIA's supporters rose to their feet, but Júlio Araújo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Rony Linhares breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Tomás Barral's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Nildo Fernandes firmly grabbed it by the left post. After some careless play in the João Pessoa Espectros defense, Júlio Araújo kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Rony Linhares. The João Pessoa Espectros fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Rony Linhares should have stopped the shot. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

In the 53rd minute, Ciro Vianna hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Clóvis Simões sent away a hard shot on goal in the 56th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 66th minute, Júlio Araújo made a precise shot to the right of Rony Linhares. João Pessoa Espectros's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-2. Júlio Araújo in the 70thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Rony Linhares, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. BAHIA's Nildo Fernandes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Miguel Prata in the 75th minute of play. After a defensive mix-up in João Pessoa Espectros's zone, Júlio Araújo stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Rony Linhares came out of the goal and Júlio Araújo tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 82nd minute, Júlio Araújo left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The BAHIA fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-3. Rony Linhares showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Júlio Araújo, who was totally free with the ball in the 89th minute. João Pessoa Espectros's Ciro Vianna got his second yellow card of the match in the 89th minute. The referee ordered Ciro Vianna off the ground. After 90 played minutes João Pessoa Espectros got a freekick which was hit by Ciro Vianna. The João Pessoa Espectros fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. BAHIA were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
