Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Anibal Eguerdi in the 8th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Sílvio Luís Quadros prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 9thth minute of the game Aílton Pitta who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but MARANATA's Armandinho Secco was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Sílvio Luís Quadros showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Anibal Eguerdi, who was totally free with the ball in the 13th minute. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Aílton Pitta in the 18th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Armandinho Secco saved MARANATA from getting behind. After 18 played minutes MARANATA got a freekick which was hit by Dário Prado. Wellington Aguiar received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 30th minute. Armandinho Secco tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Armandinho Secco showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Aílton Pitta in the 31st minute of the match. After a defensive mix-up in MARANATA's zone, Aílton Pitta stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Armandinho Secco came out of the goal and Aílton Pitta tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Aílton Pitta's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Armandinho Secco read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 37th minute of play. After 43 played minutes MARANATA got a freekick which was hit by Luís Fabiano Falcão. Aílton Pitta received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 44th minute. Armandinho Secco tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Anibal Eguerdi stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The supporters of MARANATA booed when Grêmio was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 55 match minutes in a wonderful position. Diguinho Coelho didn't get a good kick on the ball. Grêmio's Aílton Pitta got a good chance for a goal in the 62nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Aílton Pitta in the 68th minute of play forced MARANATA's goalkeeper Armandinho Secco to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 69th minute the ball was on its way in behind MARANATA's goalkeeper Armandinho Secco, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After a defensive mix-up in MARANATA's zone, Aílton Pitta stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Armandinho Secco came out of the goal and Aílton Pitta tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 73rd minute of the match, Aílton Pitta tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Armandinho Secco saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. If Wellington Aguiar had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 81st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Wellington Aguiars short, quick shot in the 88thth minute got Armandinho Secco to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Wellington Aguiar fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 96th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Armandinho Secco having to interfere. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Grêmio had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
