Fluminense FC's Márcio Cruz got a good chance for a goal in the 9th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. João Soares showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Guga Pimenta in the 11th minute of the match. Mário Jacinto struck a weak shot in the 13th minute. João Soares didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Fluminense FC. Blue's João Soares played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Guga Pimenta in the 14th minute of play. When Guga Pimenta came up free with the goalie in the 17th minute, the Fluminense FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Guga Pimenta couldn't finish the play. Márcio Cruz struck a weak shot in the 18th minute. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Adriano Ramos received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Zé Pedro Leite came out and tried to block the shot, but Adriano Ramos slotted it home off the left post making it 1-2 in the 38th minute. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-2.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Dudu Dias was the one to do the kick off. The supporters of Blue booed when Fluminense FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 52 match minutes in a wonderful position. Márcio Cruz didn't get a good kick on the ball. With 55 minutes on the clock, Betinho Carioca commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. An unexpectedly hard shot by Edinho do Vale in the 98th minute of play forced Fluminense FC's goalkeeper Zé Pedro Leite to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
