The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. A collision led to Pontal getting a freekick after 3 minutes play. If Vânderson Diniz had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 6th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Guilherme Zonta showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Vânderson Diniz in the 8th minute of the match. In the 9th minute Vânderson Diniz shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Guilherme Zonta saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Artur Romero kicked well hit freekick during the 12th minute of the match. Tomás Maranhense struck a weak shot in the 19th minute. Valdir Madureira didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Pontal. After a defensive mix-up in Saldanha's zone, Artur Romero stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Valdir Madureira came out of the goal and Artur Romero tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Artur Romero in the 24th minute of play forced Saldanha's goalkeeper Valdir Madureira to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Valdir Madureira made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Artur Romero in the 25th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 38th minute, Luiz Fabiano Simão managed to get in a good position for a shot. Saldanha's supporters rose to their feet, but Luiz Fabiano Simão was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Guilherme Zonta breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After having played for 40 minutes, Luisão Sergipano managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Saldanha's supporters crossed their fingers, but Luisão Sergipano was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Artur Romero blasted a shot towards the goal in the 45th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Valdir Madureira having to make a save.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Vânderson Diniz was the one to do the kick off. When Vânderson Diniz came up free with the goalie in the 56th minute, the Saldanha fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Vânderson Diniz couldn't finish the play. Valdir Madureira showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Artur Romero, who was totally free with the ball in the 84th minute.
