The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Afonso Montenegro fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 3rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Dé Saldanha having to interfere. Dé Saldanha took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Osvaldo Urbano, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After the first half Rio Guardians were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Osvaldo Urbano was the one to do the kick off. Artur Campidelis sent away a hard shot on goal in the 57th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Gernando da Fonseca came up free with the goalie in the 59th minute, the Rio Guardians fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Gernando da Fonseca couldn't finish the play. Through an outstanding action, after 61 minutes, Juninho Guedes successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. If Hortêncio Ramalho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 62nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Artur Campidelis's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Juninho Guedes read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 64th minute of play. With 69 minutes on the clock, Simão Peres commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. 68 minutes into the game, one of 9 de abril fc:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. The goalkeeper, Juninho Guedes, was totally fooled by Rio Guardians's Cesinha Lopez, who 71 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. After a rather tough play, 9 de abril fc's Basílio Messias got a free kick in the 78th minute. In the 82nd minute of the match Júlio Meirelles shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Juninho Guedes showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. In the 83rd minute, Elder Neto hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. An unexpected shot in the 89th minute by Hortêncio Ramalho got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Artur Campidelis recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 91st minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Artur Campidelis in the 93rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Juninho Guedes saved 9 de abril fc from getting behind. When the match was over Rio Guardians could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than 9 de abril fc throughout the match.
