Flamengo RJ's Olívio Vergílio proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 14th minute of the match, managed to save Flamengo RJ from getting a goal against them. After a defensive mix-up in Tijucano's zone, Benedito Brasil stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Marcelinho do Nascimento came out of the goal and Benedito Brasil tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. If Carlos Augusto Breckenfeld had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 21st minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Benedito Brasil scored 0-1 in the 26th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Marcelinho do Nascimento, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot.
