The audience was convinced that Rodolfo de Souza's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Fernandinho Monteiro was relentless in the 10th minute of the game. Velho's Rodolfo de Souza got a good chance for a goal in the 34th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 36 minutes into the match, Zequinha's goal looked a bit too open when Conrado Velloso came free, but Fernandinho Monteiro reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 38 minutes into the game, Zequinha's Dagoberto Alvarenga nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Luiz Baiano made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-0. Rodolfo de Souza received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 45th minute. Fernandinho Monteiro tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to Velho getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Toninho Furtado hit a great ball. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Conrado Velloso was the one to do the kick off. After having played for 52 minutes, Conrado Velloso managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Velho's supporters crossed their fingers, but Conrado Velloso was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 53rd minute Rodolfo de Souza shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fernandinho Monteiro saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Dagoberto Alvarenga in the 56th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Luiz Baiano saved Velho from getting behind. Luiz Baiano showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Dagoberto Alvarenga, who was totally free with the ball in the 68th minute. Rodolfo de Souza fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 69th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Fernandinho Monteiro having to interfere. Fernandinho Monteiro made a fantastic save in the 71st minute, when Rodolfo de Souza sent off a good shot on target. If Jerônimo Hermes had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 73rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Rodolfo de Souza's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Fernandinho Monteiro read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 75th minute of play. Zequinha's Fernandinho Monteiro proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 76th minute of the match, managed to save Zequinha from getting a goal against them. Luiz Sergipano kicked well hit freekick during the 78th minute of the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 81st minute, Rodolfo de Souza managed to get in a good position for a shot. Velho's supporters rose to their feet, but Rodolfo de Souza was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Fernandinho Monteiro breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After a defensive mix-up in Zequinha's zone, Rodolfo de Souza stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Fernandinho Monteiro came out of the goal and Rodolfo de Souza tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The supporters of Velho booed when Zequinha was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 90 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jerônimo Mattos didn't get a good kick on the ball. Rodolfo de Souza could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 92nd minute of the match, but Fernandinho Monteiro made a huge save. In the 92nd match minute, Zequinha was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Eurico Breckenfeld to maneuver through the defense. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Velho had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
