The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. If Francisco Carioca had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 4th minute. Gremio's César Amaral proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 6th minute of the match, managed to save Gremio from getting a goal against them. 19 minutes into the match, Francisco Carioca dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of César Amaral, 1-0. 31 minutes into the match, Bangu Atletic Club's goal looked a bit too open when Laércio de Medeiros came free, but Deivid de Salles reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 32 minutes into the match, Tiago Catarinense had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Deivid de Salles. Bangu Atletic Club's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Tiago Catarinense was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-1. After some fancy dribbling in the 39th minute, Francisco Carioca managed to get in a good position for a shot. Bangu Atletic Club's supporters rose to their feet, but Francisco Carioca was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. César Amaral breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The audience thought a goal was coming when Anderson Vargas got free with César Amaral in the 42nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After 43 played minutes Gremio got a freekick which was hit by Laércio Vaz. In the 47th minute of the match Bangu Atletic Club got a corner. Gremio's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Roger Cordeiro ran over to the corner to take the kick. A nice corner shot did that Roger Cordeiro got away a dangerous shot. Despite this César Amaral quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Francisco Carioca to make the kick off. César Amaral came out of the goal in the 58th minute to try and stop a shot by Bangu Atletic Club's Francisco Carioca. But to his dismay, Francisco Carioca quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. 61 minutes into the game, Narciso Fontes was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Gremio's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Bangu Atletic Club the free kick. Narciso Fontes kicked well hit freekick during the 61st minute of the match. 62 minutes into the match, Bangu Atletic Club's Roger Cordeiro broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Frank Neiva fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 65th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without César Amaral having to interfere. In the 66th minute Francisco Carioca shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but César Amaral saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Francisco Carioca in the 69th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck César Amaral prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Anderson Vargas fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 70th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without César Amaral having to interfere. If Francisco Carioca had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 72nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 74th minute, Francisco Carioca got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 77th minute Anderson Vargas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but César Amaral saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Anderson Vargas during the 81st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, Bangu Atletic Club's Anderson Vargas got a free kick in the 81st minute. If Tiago Catarinense had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 82nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Anderson Vargas sent away a hard shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. 90 minutes into the game, Renatinho Britto was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Gremio's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Bangu Atletic Club the free kick. Renatinho Britto hit a great freekick 90 minutes into the match. Roger Cordeiro took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 91st minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for César Amaral. Gremio's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Maicon das Neves fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 94th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without César Amaral having to interfere. Narciso Fontes kicked well hit freekick during the 96th minute of the match.
