Spectators: 5000 (Terracing: 4000, Seating: 1000, VIP seats: 0) Dark clouds were building up when the players entered the field. None of the them looked very eager to play. Gremio's César Amaral played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Eurico Pereira in the 6th minute of play. Ciro de Godoi kicked well hit freekick during the 6th minute of the match. Hortêncio Esteves received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 7th minute. After having played for 11 minutes, Hortêncio Esteves managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Chalana EC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Hortêncio Esteves was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When Daniel Capixaba fell near the penalty area in the 19th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Gremio's protests and gave Daniel Capixaba a yellow card for diving instead. In the 19th match minute, Gremio was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Daniel Capixaba to maneuver through the defense. Tiago Catarinense sent away a hard shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Tiago Catarinense to make the kick off. If Laércio de Medeiros had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 53rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in Chalana EC's zone, Laércio de Medeiros stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sidney do Nascimento came out of the goal and Laércio de Medeiros tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 58th minute the ball was on its way in behind Gremio's goalkeeper César Amaral, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Daniel Capixaba was shown his second yellow card after 59 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. A collision led to Gremio getting a freekick after 59 minutes play. Daniel Capixaba hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Hortêncio Esteves in the 60th minute of play forced Gremio's goalkeeper César Amaral to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Tiago Catarinense hit a great freekick 61 minutes into the match. César Amaral made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Anísio Urbano in the 67th minute of play. Frederico Vale's late challenge caught a Chalana EC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. In the 98th minute Hortêncio Esteves shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but César Amaral saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The Gremio supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Gremio would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
