But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Romário Vander couldn't finish the play. After some careless play in the Flamengo defense, Carlos Eduardo Gomes kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Ronaldão Gomes. The Flamengo fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Ronaldão Gomes should have stopped the shot. Flamengo's Ronaldão Gomes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Kléber Paraibano in the 43rd minute of play. Af the end of the first half the score was 3-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

Afonso Marquez took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Régis Bertassi, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side.
