The audience thought a goal was coming when Emerson Rossi got free with Frank Cunha in the 32nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 35th minute, Jerônimo de Medeiros got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 39th minute of the match, Gino Carioca got a very nice opportunity to score, but Frank Cunha was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Telmo Esteves showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rômulo Quadros, who was totally free with the ball in the 44th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 45th minute, Waldemar Nunes managed to get in a good position for a shot. Lança Negra's supporters rose to their feet, but Waldemar Nunes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post.
