The referee ignored Cruzeiro Porto Alegre's protests and gave Nildo Rosa a yellow card for diving instead. In the 2nd minute, Nildo Rosa hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. A collision led to Montevideu getting a freekick after 6 minutes play. Hudson Paraibano hit a great ball. Caco Vidal sent away a hard shot on goal in the 10th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Fábio Mendes blasted a shot towards the goal in the 12th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Carlos Augusto da Rocha having to make a save. An unexpectedly hard shot by Toninho Pinho in the 12th minute of play forced Montevideu's goalkeeper Carlos Augusto da Rocha to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Caco Vidal fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 15th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Giovani Lopez having to interfere. Giovani Lopez showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Eusébio do Nascimento in the 17th minute of the match. In the 19th minute Eusébio do Nascimento shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Giovani Lopez saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 23 minutes, Eusébio do Nascimento managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Montevideu's supporters crossed their fingers, but Eusébio do Nascimento was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Caco Vidal blasted a shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Giovani Lopez having to make a save. Giovani Lopez came out of the goal in the 32nd minute to try and stop a shot by Montevideu's Eusébio do Nascimento. But to his dismay, Eusébio do Nascimento quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. After having played for 41 minutes, Fábio Mendes managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Cruzeiro Porto Alegre's supporters crossed their fingers, but Fábio Mendes was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

With his leg Giovani Lopez managed to avoid a goal in the 53rdth minute, when Montevideu's Caco Vidal fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Fábio Mendes took the ball and in the 54 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Carlos Augusto da Rocha. Carlos Augusto da Rocha dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-1. When Eusébio do Nascimento came up free with the goalie in the 57th minute, the Montevideu fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Eusébio do Nascimento couldn't finish the play. 59 minutes into the match, Cruzeiro Porto Alegre's goalkeeper Giovani Lopez had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Caco Vidal. Montevideu's Caco Vidal got a good chance for a goal in the 72nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Caco Vidal received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 74th minute. Giovani Lopez tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a rather tough play, Montevideu's Hudson Paraibano got a free kick in the 76th minute. Montevideu's Carlos Augusto da Rocha played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Toninho Pinho in the 78th minute of play. In the 81st minute, Caco Vidal got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Toninho Pinho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 84th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by José Pedro Rezende during the 88th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 88th minute, one of Cruzeiro Porto Alegre:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Cruzeiro Porto Alegre. In the 89th minute, the referee gave Montevideu a penalty. Umberto Simão looked confident and blasted the ball into goal by the left post, totally unstoppable for Giovani Lopez. In the 99th match minute, Montevideu was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hudson Paraibano to maneuver through the defense.
