Juarês Proença hit a great freekick 12 minutes into the match. Abel Neto's late challenge caught a Matumse EC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Abel Neto helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Niterói FC's Abel Neto got a free kick in the 14th minute. Romário Fernandes made an important save on a dangerous shot by Antônio Carlos Freitas in the 20th minute. Matumse EC's Romário Fernandes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Silas Barbosa in the 23rd minute of play. Silas Barbosa struck a weak shot in the 32nd minute. Romário Fernandes didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Niterói FC. The crowd rose to their feet as Silas Barbosa kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Romário Fernandes. That made the score 2-0 in the 35 minute of play. Antônio Carlos Freitas was extremely unlucky when he, in the 38th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. The Niterói FC fans' excitement grew in the 41st match minute when Niterói FC's Silas Barbosa looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Romário Fernandes came out of the goal and Antônio Carlos Freitas tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 3-0.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Cláudio Sabóia to make the kick off. Romário Fernandes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Geovani Bezerra in the 53rd minute of the match. In the 59th minute Cássio Penha managed to get in a great position but fired away a sharp shot that went outside the goal on the goalie's right hand side. It could just as well have been a goal.
