União da Mata's Acácio Catarinense played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Dário Branco in the 26th minute of play. Virgílio Gomes in the 29thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Tião Veloso, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Chiquinho Berger fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 33rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Acácio Catarinense having to interfere. When Adilson Nascimento came up free with the goalie in the 36th minute, the Ferraz fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Adilson Nascimento couldn't finish the play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Oscar Neves in the 57th minute of play forced Ferraz's goalkeeper Tião Veloso to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 62nd minute, Chiquinho Berger managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ferraz's supporters rose to their feet, but Chiquinho Berger was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Acácio Catarinense breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 66th minute, Oscar Neves left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The União da Mata fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-3. If Chiquinho Berger had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 69th minute.
