Marcelo Sergipano was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 16 minutes into the match. After 16 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for vasco! Dênis Prata took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luisão Mesquita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 47 minutes, Severino da Fonseca mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Babi and the vasco players grew even worse after the yellow card. Severino da Fonseca hit a great freekick 47 minutes into the match. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.
After having played for 51 minutes, Joaquim Vinhas managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. vasco's supporters crossed their fingers, but Joaquim Vinhas was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. vasco's Dênis Prata played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Severino da Fonseca in the 54th minute of play. Elias Munhoz was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Joaquim Vinhas showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-2 in the 57 minute of play.
