Marcelo Toscano had in the 47thth minute some difficulties stopping Romário Rezende's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Simão Rodrigues to make the kick off. 54 minutes into the match, Botafogo's goalkeeper Marcelo Toscano had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Luciano Monteiro. David de Alcântara showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Luís Britto, who was totally free with the ball in the 68th minute.
