E.C CFM's supporters crossed their fingers, but Dário Oliveira was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 4 minutes into the game, Sérgio Xavier was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Esporte Clube Vitória's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave E.C CFM the free kick. A collision led to Esporte Clube Vitória getting a freekick after 5 minutes play. Sérgio Xavier hit a great ball. Luís Fábio Costa took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Walmir Furlan, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Luís Fábio Costa showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jailson Carioca, who was totally free with the ball in the 8th minute. The supporters of Esporte Clube Vitória booed when E.C CFM was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 9 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jailson Carioca didn't get a good kick on the ball. Jailson Carioca might have been able to make a better finish in the 17th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Luís Fábio Costa. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Jailson Carioca ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 21st minute, Walmir Furlan made a precise shot to the right of Luís Fábio Costa. Esporte Clube Vitória's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. In the 26th match minute, Esporte Clube Vitória was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Antônio Carlos Marquez to maneuver through the defense. The throw-in from Armandinho Lucas in the 35th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Esporte Clube Vitória's Antônio Carlos Marquez. 48 minutes into the match, Esporte Clube Vitória's goal looked a bit too open when Walmir Furlan came free, but Luís Fábio Costa reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After the first half E.C CFM were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Antônio Carlos Marquez to strike the kick off in the second half. Luís Fábio Costa showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Walmir Furlan in the 53rd minute of the match. If Jailson Carioca had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 54th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Luís Fábio Costa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Walmir Furlan in the 57th minute of play. Luís Fábio Costa was a little too slow when Walmir Furlan got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 58th minute. The score was now 0-2. In the 62nd minute, Walmir Furlan got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Walmir Furlan was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 67th minute. E.C CFM's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. In the 68th minute, Antônio Carlos Marquez hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a defensive mix-up in Esporte Clube Vitória's zone, Walmir Furlan stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Luís Fábio Costa came out of the goal and Walmir Furlan tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Luís Fábio Costa was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Walmir Furlan showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 0-3 in the 71 minute of play. In the 73rd minute, Walmir Furlan ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Luís Fábio Costa was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-4. Chiquinho Fonseca hit a great freekick 76 minutes into the match. After 82 played minutes Esporte Clube Vitória got a freekick which was hit by Antônio Carlos Marquez. 83 minutes into the match, Walmir Furlan dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Luís Fábio Costa, 0-5. Walmir Furlan fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Luís Fábio Costa having to interfere. Luís Fábio Costa showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Walmir Furlan, who was totally free with the ball in the 93rd minute. The E.C CFM supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing E.C CFM would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
