The audience thought a goal was coming when Márcio Varela got free with Edson Maciel in the 14th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Eusébio Salles was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 16th minute. Arrebol SS's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. In the 17th minute, Márcio Varela left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Arrebol SS fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-0. Mário Trancoso took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from José Maria Rocha, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. A collision led to ABC RN getting a freekick after 31 minutes play. Délio Nóbrega hit a great ball. Edson Maciel made an important save on a dangerous shot by Márcio Varela in the 32nd minute. After a defensive mix-up in Arrebol SS's zone, José Maria Rocha stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Mário Trancoso came out of the goal and José Maria Rocha tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The audience was convinced that Przemyslaw Ankiewicz's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Mário Trancoso was relentless in the 43rd minute of the game. After a rather tough play, Arrebol SS's Vítor Queirós got a free kick in the 47th minute. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.

The supporters of Arrebol SS booed when ABC RN was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 53 match minutes in a wonderful position. José Maria Rocha didn't get a good kick on the ball. Márcio Varela's late challenge caught a ABC RN's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Márcio Varela helped the player get up and apologised. After 59 minutes, Ronaldinho da Mata mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Arrebol SS and the ABC RN players grew even worse after the yellow card. Ronaldinho da Mata hit a great freekick 59 minutes into the match.
