Fabrício Peixoto could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 11th minute of the match, but José Maria Toledo made a huge save. In the 12th minute Jardel Montenegro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but José Maria Toledo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Paulo Porto in the 14th minute of play forced Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's goalkeeper Cacá Albuquerque to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 15 minutes into the game, Hernani Cavalcante was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Deportivo Cali's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Gremio PortoAlegrense JA the free kick. Paulo Porto fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cacá Albuquerque having to interfere. Lenílson do Vale sent away a hard shot on goal in the 30th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. If Felippe Lira had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 34th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Paulo Porto received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 39th minute. Cacá Albuquerque tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. José Maria Toledo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jardel Montenegro, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. A collision led to Gremio PortoAlegrense JA getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Kaká Marques hit a great ball. In the 48thth minute of the game Lenílson do Vale who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's Cacá Albuquerque was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The wind increased when Lenílson do Vale made the kick off in the second half. In the 51st minute, Lenílson do Vale left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Deportivo Cali fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Jardel Montenegro in the 90th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck José Maria Toledo prevented the ball from getting in the gole. After having played for 93 minutes, Lenílson do Vale managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Deportivo Cali's supporters crossed their fingers, but Lenílson do Vale was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 97th match minute, Gremio PortoAlegrense JA was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Osmar Carvalho to maneuver through the defense. The Gremio PortoAlegrense JA supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching Deportivo Cali's performance. The match ended with a win for Deportivo Cali.
