In the 2nd minute, Carlos Alberto Soares ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Edgard de Almeida was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. Edgard de Almeida showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Walmir Pombal in the 5th minute of the match. Carlos Alberto Soares recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 6th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The throw-in from Vicente Valladares in the 10th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Montesclarense E.C.'s Marcos Eger. Catugi FC's Carlos Alberto Soares got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 19th minute the ball was on its way in behind Catugi FC's goalkeeper Reko Nybacka, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 20thth minute of the game Carlos Alberto Soares who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Montesclarense E.C.'s Edgard de Almeida was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After 21 played minutes Catugi FC got a freekick which was hit by Ernesto de Amaral. When Paulão Medeiros fell near the penalty area in the 23rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Montesclarense E.C.'s protests and gave Paulão Medeiros a yellow card for diving instead. After a rather tough play, Montesclarense E.C.'s Paulão Medeiros got a free kick in the 23rd minute. The audience was convinced that Carlos Alberto Soares's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Edgard de Almeida was relentless in the 26th minute of the game. The supporters of Montesclarense E.C. booed when Catugi FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 28 match minutes in a wonderful position. Edson Couto didn't get a good kick on the ball. 29 minutes into the game, André Luís Schmidt cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-1. Edgard de Almeida tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 33 minutes into the match, Montesclarense E.C.'s goal looked a bit too open when Walmir Duarte came free, but Edgard de Almeida reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 35 minutes Montesclarense E.C.'s defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Benjamim Alvarenga who took care of the corner kick. After 38 played minutes Montesclarense E.C. got a freekick which was hit by Wilson do Nascimento. 39 minutes into the match, Carlos Alberto Soares notched a goal, 1-2, to the right of Montesclarense E.C.'s Edgard de Almeida. Edgard de Almeida was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Walmir Pombal hit a great freekick 41 minutes into the match. 47 minutes had been played when some careless play by Catugi FC's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Ernani Tavares was slow to take the kick. During this time Montesclarense E.C.'s players had a chance to rest. The corner led Montesclarense E.C.'s Ernani Tavares to fire away a dangerous shot which Reko Nybacka despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for André Luís Schmidt to strike the kick off in the second half. 52 minutes into the match, Montesclarense E.C.'s Paulão Medeiros sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Reko Nybacka narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The audience thought a goal was coming when Walmir Pombal got free with Edgard de Almeida in the 57th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 63rd minute André Luís Schmidt shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Reko Nybacka saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Edson Couto could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 65th minute of the match, but Edgard de Almeida made a huge save. 68 minutes into the match, Montesclarense E.C.'s goal looked a bit too open when Carlos Alberto Soares came free, but Edgard de Almeida reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Eurico Velloso's late challenge caught a Catugi FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Eurico Velloso helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Montesclarense E.C.'s Eurico Velloso got a free kick in the 70th minute. In the 72nd minute of the match Fabiano Maranhense sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Edgard de Almeida skillfully saved the ball. In the 79th minute of the match Jaime França shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Edgard de Almeida showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Carlos Alberto Soares in the 82nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Edgard de Almeida prevented the ball from getting in the gole. If André Luís Schmidt had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 84th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by André Luís Schmidt in the 85th minute of play forced Catugi FC's goalkeeper Reko Nybacka to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Paulão Medeiros sent away a hard shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. A collision led to Montesclarense E.C. getting a freekick after 87 minutes play. Paulão Medeiros hit a great ball. In the 89th minute, Wilson do Nascimento hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 90th minute Carlos Alberto Soares shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Edgard de Almeida saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Paulão Medeiros kicked well hit freekick during the 92nd minute of the match. The Catugi FC players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
