To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 31 minutes into the match, Fala Sério FC's goalkeeper Afonsinho Marques had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Walmyr Salles. The audience thought a goal was coming when Walmyr Salles got free with Afonsinho Marques in the 32nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. If Walmyr Salles had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 33rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. With a little luck, Fala Sério FC's Afonsinho Marques got control of the ball when Walmyr Salles tried to sneak it across the goal line. Marcos Buffon made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pedro Moraes in the 38th minute of play. Dario Alegría struck a weak shot in the 42nd minute. Afonsinho Marques didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for AVAÍ F.C.. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.
