Ciro Fraco's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Aureliusz Wolniewicz read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 38th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 40th minute, Andrea Nicolo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Athletic Club Bilbao's supporters rose to their feet, but Andrea Nicolo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Ciro Fraco might have been able to make a better finish in the 52nd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Aureliusz Wolniewicz. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Ciro Fraco ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 53rd minute, Epifanio Hug hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Palmas's Baltasar Iratxo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Andrea Nicolo in the 56th minute of play. When Adrian Che fell near the penalty area in the 60th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Athletic Club Bilbao's protests and gave Adrian Che a yellow card for diving instead. In the 60th match minute, Athletic Club Bilbao was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Adrian Che to maneuver through the defense.
