The coaching staff of independiente protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Dario Berdoi had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. In the 2nd minute, one of independiente:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for independiente. Cristian Piarres made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tor Hökqvist in the 9th minute of play. In the 20th minute, independiente's Gustavo Lizbeth ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Vladimiro Madeo. Vladimiro Madeo yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-1. After 32 played minutes independiente got a freekick which was hit by Alejandro Pinto. Cristian Piarres was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. When Ted Berg came up free with the goalie in the 46th minute, the SAN TELMO FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ted Berg couldn't finish the play. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Mariano Guipuzkoa made a kick off. Vladimiro Madeo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Gustavo Lizbeth, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 53rd minute Tor Hökqvist shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cristian Piarres saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Vladimiro Madeo showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Gustavo Lizbeth in the 63rd minute of the match. Cesar Criston hit a great freekick 65 minutes into the match. Ernesto Beremundo sent away a hard shot on goal in the 68th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance.
