Matheu's German Frechoso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Conrado Ovando in the 43rd minute of play. After the first half Newells old Boys were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

In the 84th minute, Newells old Boys's Adolfo Eriz ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind German Frechoso. German Frechoso yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 0-6. Silvio Balendin made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Enrique Quirce in the 87th minute of play. Gualterio Papo received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 90th minute. Silvio Balendin tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
