In the 3rd match minute, River Plate was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Vladimiro Sindo to maneuver through the defense. Candido Xabier struck a weak shot in the 4th minute. Luciano Bermudo didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Club Atletico Peñarol. Luciano Bermudo stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Modesto Jaizki's shot from short distance in the 9th minute. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Enrique Veronica during the 10th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 10 played minutes River Plate got a freekick which was hit by Enrique Veronica. Luciano Bermudo didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Owe Simmelkiær went, in the 11th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-2 was the resulting score. The supporters of Club Atletico Peñarol booed when River Plate was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 14 match minutes in a wonderful position. Robustiano Argenis didn't get a good kick on the ball. Luciano Bermudo came out of the goal in the 15th minute to try and stop a shot by Club Atletico Peñarol's Owe Simmelkiær. But to his dismay, Owe Simmelkiær quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-3. If Aaron Kepa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 19th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Jose Frances hit a great freekick 24 minutes into the match. Andres Ariando could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 27th minute of the match, but Pascual Gaspard made a huge save. Jose Frances sent away a hard shot on goal in the 28th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Jose Frances fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 30th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Luciano Bermudo having to interfere. After 35 minutes, Aaron Kepa made it 0-4 with a short kick to the right side. River Plate's Luciano Bermudo tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Aaron Kepa fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 40th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Luciano Bermudo having to interfere. Silvio Corderall recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 43rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After some careless play in the River Plate defense, Owe Simmelkiær kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Luciano Bermudo. The River Plate fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Luciano Bermudo should have stopped the shot. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-5.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Ignacio Guipuzkoa to make the kick off. Honorio Birila sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Aaron Kepa fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 62nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Luciano Bermudo having to interfere. Silvio Corderall's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 63rdth minute, Luciano Bermudo skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Owe Simmelkiær's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Luciano Bermudo read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 72nd minute of play. After 72 played minutes River Plate got a freekick which was hit by Ciro Pes. Aaron Kepa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 73rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Jose Frances's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 76thth minute, Luciano Bermudo skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Silvio Corderall sent away a hard shot on goal in the 81st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a defensive mix-up in River Plate's zone, Silvio Corderall stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Luciano Bermudo came out of the goal and Silvio Corderall tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Luciano Bermudo didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Jose Frances went, in the 88th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-8 was the resulting score. After 91st play minutes Owe Simmelkiær shot 0-9, a short shot which went by Luciano Bermudo and just under the crossbar into goal. In the 96th minute, River Plate's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Silvio Corderall fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. Pascual Gaspard showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ignacio Guipuzkoa, who was totally free with the ball in the 97th minute. Club Atletico Peñarol's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
