Republic of Ireland's Honorio Tello got a good chance for a goal in the 31st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Celso Padro kicked well hit freekick during the 32nd minute of the match. Baldomero Jerico showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Honorio Tello, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. After 43 minutes Republic of Ireland's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Cristo Ramirez who took care of the corner kick. Celso Tancredo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Mariano Anaya in the 44th minute of play. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.
